Congratulations! Your SES resume was reviewed by the selection committee and they have called you in for the first interview.  Are you ready and prepared for that experience?

  • Do you know what to say when first asked “So, tell us about yourself and why you think you are a good candidate for this position”.
  • Do you know how to create your compelling story during an interview that positions you as the best candidate for the job?
  • Do you know the types of interviews and how to prepare and navigate the assessment involved in a federal SES interview?
  • Do you know what questions to ask at the conclusion of the interview?

Today federal managers are increasingly turning to the Behavioral Based Structured Interview as the best practice strategy in order to make the best hiring decisions into the ranks of the Senior Executive Service (SES).  The reason for this is simple.  This process has been validated as providing selecting officials with the best predictive evidence the person selected will be successful on the job.  That person can be you!

The Behavioral Based Structured Interview is founded on the premise recent past behavior is the best predictor of future performance in similar circumstances.  A Behavioral Based Structured Interview consists of carefully planned, job-related questions that can be systematically scored to reliably identify highly qualified job candidates.   An expert federal interview trainer will prepare you for this type of interview giving you the insights and confidence you need to ace the interview.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Decipher the Vacancy Announcement to understand how you will be evaluated and what questions you will likely be asked during the interview.
  • Understand what the interviewers use as a process for scoring behavioral bench marks to quantify interview responses.
  • Learn a framework response to the question “Tell us about yourself and what makes you a good applicant for this position?”
  • Map your accomplishments by ECQ and sub competencies, as identified by OPM, to create a response that matches the structured interview format.
  • Use a powerfully created work experience description to develop a compelling statement and response to the interview questions.
  • Participate in a practical exercise using a videotaped mock SES level Behavioral Based Structured Interview.
  • Analyze and review your video of the mock interview and gain insights for improving interview performance.
  • Understand how to answer the unscored supplemental interview “fit” questions and follow post interview etiquette.
