Through 30 years of work with Federal jobseekers and their complex employment environment, Kathryn Troutman of the Resume Place has emerged as the leading expert on Federal job search techniques. True to her nickname, the "Federal Job Search Guru," Kathryn spends much of her time training others on how to most efficiently navigate the complicated Federal hiring system. Since 1995, she has trained more than 25,000 people in the best Federal work search processes.

Every week, Kathy provides lively interviews to radio stations across America on the current, local Federal job opportunities and the latest application techniques from an insider's perspective. She is a regular guest on both FedTalk Radio and The Washington Post's "Federal Diary Live On-Line" with Steve Barr. Her new career title, Ten Steps to a Federal Job, is making applying for Federal jobs less intimidating to jittery jobseekers. Troutman has been quoted by the Washington Post, in Joyce Lain Kennedy's syndicated newspaper column, "Careers Now," and on major websites such as GovExec.com, Monster.com and Headhunter.com. She also writes a weekly column, "Federal Career Corner," which is featured on this website, as well as a biweekly column for "Military Transitions" magazine. Other Troutman career books include her best-selling The Federal Resume Guidebook, the classic Electronic Federal Resume Guidebook and the popular Creating Your High School Resume.

Troutman's work in Federal employment has its roots in the establishment of the Resume Place just two blocks from the White House in 1973. Her resume service quickly became known for its expertise in Federal applications packages. In 1995, she created the Federal-style resume format that is now widely accepted as the standard in government, and it can be found at the Office of Personnel Management's website, www.usajobs.opm.gov. Today the Resume Place is located in suburban Baltimore, and the firm produces resumes for clients around the world. U.S. Federal resumes remain a specialty.

In 2002, Troutman established a unique certification program for Federal Job Search Training through the Maryland Institute for Employment and Training Professionals. Offered to career professionals, this training will enable Kathryn to expand the availability of the Federal Job Search workshops. Troutman is currently the main instructor for this cutting-edge coursework. The first certification class graduated in November 2002.
