HOT OFF THE PRESSES --

"Student's Federal Career Guide,
Steps to Find and Win Top Government Jobs and Internships"

THE BOOK IDEA

The book began the day Kathryn received this e-mail, on May 8th, 2003, from a University of South Carolina Career Counselor:

"I'm a career counselor at the University of South Carolina. Many of us carry your Federal Resume Writing book in our career center libraries, but we all share a common frustration we've been recently discussing. We have a hard time finding samples of resumes on the level of most college students with minimal experience. I know your book has a few samples for students, but I wondered if you could assist us with this. Since federal employment is your forte, I thought you might be interested in putting some material together specifically for this population. I know if you wrote another book on entry-level employment in the federal government (with more realistic resume samples for the typical college student), we'd definitely get it for our students. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks!"

Kathryn started on the book that evening. It took 17 months, but will be published/completed THIS WEEK -- finally!

ABOUT THE BOOK

The book is written and designed to help students understand the federal hiring and internship process. The "Student’s Federal Career Guide" is truly a complete guide, delivering information that college students and new grads need to know about approaching this dynamic job market. Its 10 chapters walk the reader through the application process in a modified version of Kathryn Troutman’s proven 10 Step formula. Everything from networking to choosing an agency, finding internships and job openings, writing resumes, applying, following-up and interviewing are covered. Job-listing links, resume templates and other resources are on the CD which comes with the book. Important details like government pay schedules are also explained in the Guide. Perhaps most important is that numerous opportunities for internships and employment are identified.

The book is 243 pages long, with student stories and photos to start each "Step" of the book. Easy-to-read, two-color charts include:
  • "Find Your Federal Job"TM

  • 75 Federal Internship Websites

  • Outstanding Scholar and Superior Academic Achievement Charts

  • Vacancy Announcements for Career Advancement

  • Three Federal Resume Styles
Read the Table of Contents and a chapter from the book at www.tenstepsforstudents.org soon !!

ABOUT THE CD-ROM

The CD-ROM contains 13 samples of successful student job-searchers. You can view two of the student stories and federal resumes at www.tenstepsforstudents.org. The other samples and stories are on the CD-ROM, which is for either PC or Mac. The CD also includes the popular KSA Builder and hot links to 75 Internship websites for federal agencies.

PUBLISHING THE BOOK

12,000 copies were printed and will be available at www.resume-place.com and where books are sold. The book is being published by The Resume Place, Inc. and printed by United Book Press, Baltimore, MD.

Brian Moore, from MJRMedia in California, designed the interior page, cover page and website.

Photos are by Kelly Rogers in Minnesota and Lisa Shaw at The Resume Place in Baltimore, MD.

Harry C. Redd III retired as a Sr. Human Resources Policy Analyst from the Merit Systems Protection Board in May 2004. One week later, he was the HRM Technical advisor and editor for the book ensuring that we had the correct information on internships and hiring processes.

David Raikow, Ph.D. and Susan Custard contributed to chapters of the book on Internships, Interviewing, KSA Writing, Tracking and Following-Up. David includes his successful federal job search story which landed him at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in a great scientist position!

MOTHER-DAUGHTER STORY

Kathryn asked Emily to review the draft of the Ten Step book. Emily took the liberty to rewrite one of the chapters and sent it back to Kathryn. Emily told her sister, Lori, that she expected "mom" to ask her to re-write the book. That's what happened, and Kathryn was thrilled with the Generation Y rewrite. Together they worked on the book further to change the voice and writing style to appeal more to young people.

BOOK REVIEW

From Brian Friel, Editor, National Journal and Government Executive Magazine

For university students and recent graduates seeking jobs in the federal government, Kathryn and Emily Troutman tell it like it is. Simply put, it is not easy to get a federal job. Many positions are highly coveted and receive thousands of applications for just a few spots. In addition, the government imposes numerous application requirements, security clearance checks and other hoops and hurdles on applicants. Students need to know what to expect, and the Troutmans clearly explain the federal hiring obstacle course. Of particular use is the CD with stories of real, successful applicants, who explain how they were able to land their dream jobs. Hearing the realities of federal job-seeking from successes is one of the best ways to learn how to get a federal job yourself. In my years writing for GovExec.com--the must-read daily news Web site for government employees and managers--I heard from hundreds of frustrated, angry and disheartened federal job applicants. The Troutmans' new book can help you avoid being one of them.
