FEDERAL CAREER COACH FEATURE QUESTION
A big thanks to Leigh Moore, President of The Bridge career management services, LMSW, PHR, Certified Professional Résumé Writer and Certified Federal Résumé Writer & Coach, for offering the Q&A for this week's Feature Question.
Federal Jobseeker Question:
How do I know if I'm a good fit for a federal job?
Response:
This is a great question — it’s definitely in the frequently asked questions category! First, in determining a career path, start with yourself. Look at your personality, interests, values, skills and what motivates you. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the world’s most widely used personality assessment and we recently used an MBTI Step II instrument to assist a client with the same question. The assessment confirmed for her that the type of work she was targeting was a good fit for her strong analytical abilities and her objective decision-making style. It also helped her pinpoint what her strengths and challenges would be in the actual job search process. The more you know yourself, the easier it will be to identify jobs and work environments that are a good fit for you.
The second aspect of this question steers you back to the first step in our Ten Steps to a Federal Job process. Networking. To really evaluate an agency’s work environment to see if the culture of that organization is a good fit for you, talk with people who work there. Have you ever heard of six degrees of separation — the theory that you are not separated from anyone else by more than six people? Have some fun with it and see how many contacts/calls you need to make to get introduced to someone in an agency where you are not known. Professional associations are a good place to start. Good luck to you!

"SQS"
SQS stands for Supplemental Qualification Statement. It is a form that is used to apply for certain positions only; not for all jobs. When used, the SQS can generally be completed either on-line or in paper format. To determine if an SQS is needed to apply for the job you are interested in, please read the "How to Apply" instructions in the job posting very carefully. If you have additional questions about the application process, please direct your question to the point of contact shown at the bottom of the job announcement. (from USAJOBS FAQs)

FEDERAL RESUME AND KSA WRITING TIPS
Electronic Resume Format vs. Paper-Based Resume Format
If you are applying for a number of federal positions, you may notice that some of them ask for on-line resume submissions and some ask for you to mail the application in via snail mail. Do not make the mistake of using the same resume for both types of submissions.
It is a good idea to have two versions of your resume -- an electronic version for the on-line submission, and a written, paper-based version for mailing out. Here are some of the BASIC differences:
Electronic Version
- Emphasis is on key words.
- You will be cutting and pasting information into an on-line system that will prompt you for the information that is required.
Paper-Based Version
- You need to pay more attention to the format and design because this version will more likely be read by a person than a computer.
- You can be a little more creative in how you present the information because you will not be confined by the on-line submission screens and word count restrictions.
While the differences aren't numerous, they are important enough to warrant different versions for on-line resume submissions and paper-based submissions. The Resume Place specializes in creating paper-based and electronic resumes, or conversions from one format to the other. For more information, go to http://www.resume-place.com/services/index.html.
