(Baltimore, Maryland - October 27, 2004) - With a high percentage of its aging workforce eligible for retirement, the U.S. government's Senior Executive Service (SES) offers exceptional opportunities for those who want to serve their country as high-level employees. But SES job candidates pressured by the demands of their current positions may have little time to pull together the necessary written application pieces. A multi-part lunchtime workshop held on three consecutive Mondays in November can jumpstart the process.
"Writing a Senior Executive Service Package" is an executive career development workshop co-sponsored by The Resume Place, top consultants on the federal job market, and Federal Daily, a leading news source for government employees. Held November 8, 15 and 22, the program is offered in a world-wide accessible format that combines a live and interactive Web seminar with open communication between the teacher and attendees via teleconferencing technology. The series features well-known instructor Kathryn Kraemer Troutman, an experienced SES trainer and highly skilled federal jobs coach.
"A lot of federal executive jobs need to be filled from both inside and outside of government," Troutman points out. "This workshop series provides a unique grounding for SES applicants, and it's live and interactive. The classes are a special opportunity for high-powered decision-makers to get together to understand the SES hiring process, to brainstorm their accomplishments, and to motivate each other."
The workshop will be meaningful to all SES jobseekers, whether or not they are currently in the executive service. The classes are designed for SES executives seeking a move within public service, government employees wanting to advance into the SES, and private sector administrators who now want to engage their skills and knowledge in government work. Running from noon to 1:30 PM Eastern Standard Time, the 90-minute classes cover:
Week 1 - Introduction to the SES Hiring Process. Working with a Power Point presentation, the instructor offers insider insights on the SES hiring processes and how to apply.
Week 2 - How to Develop the Required ECQs. To apply for the SES, applicants must write five narrative statements capturing their accomplishments within a required written format (the ECQ - Executive Core Qualifications). The first two ECQs cover leading change and leading people. As classmates listen on the phone and watch Troutman take notes on screen, the job coach interviews two executive volunteers about their achievements in these areas. Attendees see how job successes are pinpointed and how an outline for an ECQ can be effectively created.
Week 3 - Brainstorming the ECQs + Intro to the Federal Resume. Time allowing and in a roundtable format, Troutman interviews all attending regarding their greatest job accomplishments. Special attention is paid to the remaining required ECQs (results driven, business acumen and building coalitions). The experienced job coach also offers tips on how to stand out in an executive federal resume.
Troutman says that jobs available in the Senior Executive Service are high-energy, high-budget positions, often referred to as Directors or Associate Directors of programs and agencies. The typical salary is between $104,927 and $145,600 a year. Recent openings have included such dynamic positions as Director of the News Division of the Department of Health and Human Services and Director of the Program Operations and Planning Division of NASA. The cost of the SES workshop is only $300 per person, or $250 per person if three or more participants sign up together from one agency. In addition to the instruction, participants receive the introductory PowerPoint, Troutman's classic Federal Resume Guidebook and CD-Rom (with template resumes, cover letters, etc.), the Senior Executive Service Leadership handbook, plus class notes typed live by Troutman. Each session is recorded, and the series is available post-workshop on audio CD-Rom for $45. Attendees and those missing a class can listen FREE to the class recordings via the Internet for up to 30 days. Class size is limited to 22.
