It's been a year since September 11 and the government changed a large part of it's mission to Homeland Security. Most of the news about the Federal government has to do with Homeland Security, budget, Defense systems and only a little bit about the people who are needed to carry out this mission. All of the government's work is performed by Federal employees or contractors and their jobs are changing too. Since September 11 new jobs have been created and many more are still to come as the Department of Homeland Security is established - whenever it actually happens.
If you have been affected by the downturn in the economy and loss of jobs due to Sept. 11 and the more recent corporate scandals, then you should consider a Federal job now. The government is hiring due to the Homeland Security emphasis, as well as the fact that about ½ of the government employees will be retiring in 5 to 7 years. There will actually be a shortage of federal employees! To be serious about applying for a federal job, you need information about how to apply, how the agencies hire and where to find the job listings. This means RESEARCH AND READING of websites, articles and learning about the Federal government as an employer! This column is review of the government's job website and a compilation of some of the best articles on federal jobs in recent months. Learn and read, then get ready to apply for a career-oriented federal job!
