Where are the
Homeland Readiness and Security Jobs?
Kathryn K. Troutman
Finding the Homeland Security job listings can be challenging. The Homeland Security Department has just been established and the jobs are listed on web pages within the www.dhs.gov pages and/or www.usajobs.opm.gov. You can look at our new Federal Job links page for Homeland Security agency jobs and careers:

PRIVATE INDUSTRY EMPLOYEES ARE SEEKING FEDERAL JOBS MORE THAN EVER
The Resume Place has specialized in federal resume writing for more than 20 years and until September 11 most of our clients were federal employees seeking advancement or career change. But that has changed now. Approximately 60% of our clients are private industry professionals
who are out of work, or almost out of work, who are trying to GET INTO GOVERNMENT
. They want steady jobs that have meaning and career advancement potential.
PATRIOTISM HAS SINCERELY HIT THE FEDERAL JOB MARKET
Patriotism is growing in the Federal job market. People truly want to work for the federal government so they can contribute to important programs and services. They want to ensure homeland security and support the war fighters who are risking their lives in the War with Iraq and elsewhere.
People want to get jobs to help defend our country. They say on the phone, "I am determined to get a job in the government, it's what I really want to do. I want something meaningful. I want to help make our country safer. I will figure out this application system and I will get a job in government. Can you help me?" Yes, we can help.
When I am on the radio all over the U.S., the DJs ask me, "Kathryn, where are the jobs listed for Homeland Security jobs?" I tell them about the specific agency listings that you will see later in this column. And then they ask, "What are the jobs in Homeland Security anyway? Where can I see the job titles?" Lots of jobseekers do not know how to find the job titles or the job listings.
Last week, I decided to research the Homeland Security agency job listings and career titles myself. I came up with an excellent new website list. The job titles are so interesting and the duties sound rewarding and meaningful. Some of the agencies and departments have their own employment / careers pages, others link to www.usajobs.opm.gov. The agencies have their jobs listed in many ways: careers, jobs, employment, or "working with".
10 STEPS TO FINDING AND ANALYZING VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENTS TO MATCH YOUR INTERESTS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Check our Federal Job Links web addresses to read about the agencies and the jobs
- Look at particular agency job listings on either the agency website or www.usajobs.opm.gov
- Determine which job titles are best for you -- by studying the announcements
- Save or print the vacancy announcements
- Look at the job title and grade -- make sure you can qualify for the grade level
- Look at the name of the agency, the office and location of the job
- Read the closing dates to make sure you make the cut-off
- Read the duties to see if you would like to do this job
- Read the qualifications section to see if you are qualified
- Read the "how to apply" section to see what you have to write to apply for the job
RESEARCH YOUR JOB ANNOUNCEMENTS -- KEY TO SUCCESS!
Successfully finding announcements, studying the duties and "how to apply" instructions is important research needed to write a correct application. This cannot be emphasized enough. You must read the announcements carefully and follow the directions to apply. The agencies each have their own way of receiving and managing applications, and even a different application format, but jobseekers have to learn each agency's method and become familiar with the various processes to be successful.
