FEDERAL JOB APPLICATIONS ARE DIFFERENT THAN PRIVATE INDUSTRY
Applying for a Federal job is more than just writing a resume and cover letter and sending it in. It is a PROJECT. You have to learn about the job titles, agencies, correct grade levels for your experience and understand the "how to apply" instructions. So this email and others that will come will introduce you to various parts of the Federal job process.
THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS YOU
PLEASE APPLY SUCCESSFULLY!
The government is hiring. There are 50,000 jobs open right now. This effort you are making toward applying for a Federal job is WORTHWHILE. So, keep at it. Read these emails, seriously consider ordering the books described here, and then when you are ready consider our full-service writing services to help you put the final package together.
FIRST STAGE - RESEARCH, READ, WRITE
CAREER CHANGE - MILITARY OR PRIVATE INDUSTRY TO A FEDERAL JOB
FIRST FIVE STEPS TO A FEDERAL JOB
Here are 5 things you can do that will help you prepare for your transition from PRIVATE INDUSTRY OR THE MILITARY into a civilian Federal or Defense position The Resume Place, Inc. publishes books, creates federal resume samples and templates, provides a Federal Job Qualification Analysis service and then (Stage 2 - next newsletter) ... provides actual full-service writing, review, critique, editing and design services for the final packages.
TWO RESUME FORMATS IN GOVERNMENT
FEDERAL "PAPER" RESUME AND ELECTRONIC RESUME
Some agencies require paper resumes - which are called the Federal resume. Usually these agencies will also ask for KSAs - or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities statements.
Some agencies (mostly Defense agencies) want an electronic resume.
The two resumes are similar in content, but very different in format.
When the announcement instructions say this: " you may submit an OF 612, SF-171, resume or any format you choose", you can submit a paper Federal resume.
When the instructions say that you can submit a "resume only", then they want an electronic resume submitted by email in the textbox, or through a resume builder.
RESUME PLACE BOOKS, JOB ANALYSIS SERVICE AND KSA BUILDER:
Consider Resume Place books to review excellent, successful Federal and Electronic resume samples.
- FEDERAL JOB QUALIFICATIONS ANALYSIS - $150. We analyze your current resume or background. You would need to provide info on education, training, experience, etc. We would prepare a report with job titles, grade levels and agencies that would be appropriate for you. This would be very helpful for you to search for the right job titles based on your experience. How to order? Write to Kathryn@resume-place.com. We will ask you a series of questions, then prepare our qualifications statement concerning your job titles, appropriate grade, occupational series, suggested agencies and resume format needed for your particular agencies.
- You could use both of our books:
They have samples and templates for both the "paper" Federal resume and the Electronic resume used for Defense agencies. $79.00 for both books and PC disk and CD-ROM. These books are really important resources - you do need them! People REALLY like these books and help them TREMENDOUSLY with writing their first federal or electronic resume. Order this from www.resume-place.com.
- You could order our KSA BUILDER which could help you begin thinking about KSAs. Some agencies still ask for KSAs. The KSA Builder is $35.00. The on-line Builder helps you create good examples that support each Knowledge, Skill and Ability. Order the KSA Builder from www.resume-place.com - Order form page.
- Then after you have done your homework, worked on your resume and researched some announcements (for keywords and applications), you could send your draft to us for editing and focusing toward particular positions.
- I also recommend WWW.FEDERALJOBSEARCH.COM to search for job leads. It costs a little $$, but is a very good site. They send you emails with job listings. You need to read the listings to find keywords, etc. for the applications when you're ready to submit.
Thanks for completing our help form on WWW.FEDERALJOBSEARCH.COM and WWW.RESUME-PLACE.COM. We can help you make your transition.
