The Federal Resume Format

The SF-171 has been eliminated in 1995 and it is now recommended that you use the federal resume as your application for federal jobs. The new federal resume is much more concise than the 171. The SF-171 could be 50+ pages — the Federal Resume is 3-5 pages total. You might wonder, "How do I condense 50+ pages down to 5 pages?" The Federal Resume is focused on the last ten years of experience, accomplishments and projects. Previous experience can be included, but with less descriptions. The new resume is written in active voice, not the old bureaucratic passive voice writing style. The SF-171 was a life history, the resume is a summary which sells the best skills and experience you have.

The Resumix® Resume Format

Department of Defense Agencies: Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy and other DOD agencies are requiring RESUME ONLY. They are using the Resumix® system to manage applicant resumes and to search for qualified candidates. An electronic resume must be written in a very specific way. And it must contain the key words for your occupational series. The length is typically 5 pages (Air Force, Navy, Marines and other DOD agencies), but the Army requires 3 pages usually. Resume Place editors are experts in editing and formatting Resumix® resumes for all DOD human resources offices. You can request any of the DOD formats, or we can tell you which format is correct depending on your agency, region and HR office. We can interpret the "how to apply" directions in your vacancy announcement.

Features of the Resume Builder — good for both Federal and Resumix® formats

By completing your draft in the Resume Builder and sending it to our editors, we can edit and review your content to ensure that you have drafted a good "first draft" of either format listed above. After you have completed the first draft using the Resume Builder and we have edited the content, you may need to work on the resume more … wait and see how it looks. An excellent Federal or Resume® resume can take an applicant 5 to 15 hours to complete. It is your no. 1 career document!
