STUDENT RESUME WRITING TIPS

Start Here with an Assessment
As a student you need to stand out among your competition. The job market for newly-graduating students is very tough right now. And if you're applying for an Internship before you graduate, that's a difficult application as well. Here are a few tips that can help you write a better resume for either a temporary professional position, internship or first-time career job:
  1. FOCUS your resume toward your career objective. If your objective is MARKETING, then use language that will support a Marketing career.
  2. Include an OBJECTIVE. Change your resume for each application.
  3. Include a SKILLS SUMMARY at the top of the resume after the objective. Make sure the skills will be helpful to your objective market
  4. Under EDUCATION, include your activities and honors, GPA (if it is over 3.0) and leadership activities.
  5. Under EDUCATION, include your major papers and presentations. If a paper was significant and involved original research and writing. Write about your research, your thesis and your presentation.
  6. WORK EXPERIENCE: Include the jobs that are most relevant to your objective. If you worked just a very short time at a non-relevant company, don't even include it on the resume.
  7. INTERNSHIPS: Write the internship as though it was a "real job". Write about the duties and skills you developed.
  8. LENGTH: keep the resume to one page if possible. BUT if you have extensive experience, papers, and jobs, go to TWO PAGES. The important thing is CONTENT, not length.
  9. PRESENTATION: The resume has to look good. The typefont should not be less than 11 point type. It should be readable and great looking.
  10. PAPER: Use very good quality white or off-white paper for paper applications.
  11. ELECTRONIC: paper won't matter. The electronic resume should be flush left, ragged right, with paragraphs that are small. Use ALL CAPS to highlight important items.
  12. PROOFREAD: carefully, have someone else read your resume for you.
  13. SELL YOURSELF: You have to sell yourself, nobody else will. If you are highly skilled in a particular area, you should say just that. Be sure to tell the reader about your expertise and skills at the top of the resume.
  14. COVER LETTER: Write a cover letter that is interesting and compelling. Use our free cover letter builder to BUILD your resume draft. You can find it here: http://www.resume-place.com/brianlasttest/booksandbuilders/bldr_covletter.html
